Decided to move this conversation here... So, Nightwish, a finnish goth band with an opera singer vocalist (ex-vocalist). We can talk about the music, lyrics or the drama. For more information about the band go here: www.nightwish.com/

Nightwish..... they did "Wishmaster", right? A pretty neat song, which actually would qualify to be under LotR related music *chuckles* I've tried to sing it several times, but it's a little bit fast paced. One day I'll get it without stumbling over the words....

Wishmaster... well... my knowledge of Nightwish mostly comes from YouTube. I've listened to a lot of their songs and considered getting the "Greatest" album (don't remember the name) when I saw it in the shop, but it might spoil my general impression of the band if I got 15 songs from them. I just like a few.
By the way, it's interesting that the languages on website is Finnish, English - and German, says something about where the fans come from I guess..!

Yup, they're very popular in Germany.
I think interesting about Nightwish is their lyrics. They are often fantasy-like, filled with strange metaphors, very interesting but yet the meaning often remains a mystery. Imagination can paint beautiful pictures of the words.

Very true, but it can also be too mysterious for my liking. I can't deny I love words, but there must be a meaning to the words and how they are put together. Therefore it's kind of strange that lyrics isn't the first thing I notice in a song... only if I really like a song I listen to the lyrics and the meaning, but when I do so, I usually get disappointed because the song doesn't paint the picture I already saw in my head. Hmm.... when I listen to songs I see pictures rather than words... Imagination...

I agree with you. One of these songs I've first liked and then felt a disappointment is Nightwish's Over the Hills and Far Away. I had taken only a few lines from the lyrics and in my mind painted a picture of the song.
"Over the hills and far away She prays he will return one day."
I actually drew it on paper once. There was a tower chamber and a maiden at the window, looking out at a rider in the moonlight.
When I checked the lyrics in the Internet I found out that the story had nothing to do with the Middle Ages. I was very disappointed.
Now when I listen to that song I try to ignore the words and get back the picture I used to have, but it never quite works. I still grab those two lines - Over the hills and far away, she prays he will return one day.

There is a longing in that song... clearly it deals with seperation, I just wonder... does she really want him to return.. based on the whole lyrics.. or is it merely the dream about him she longs for. Umm... *cough* anyway...
Owh and Sleeping Sun.. there are so many great lines in that song, but I think it becomes a mess when put together the way they are. When I read one line, I get one picture in my head and then with the next line I see a whole different emotion, it's like fragments... err... hard to please the crowd....
