Well, I happened to watch half an episode of The Little House on the Prairie today. I didn't mean to but as I mentioned... it just happened. It was the one where they are having Christmas and everybody in the Ingalls Wilder-family is sneaking around to keep their Christmas from the others, preparing, sewing and knitting and so on.
So every scene basically builds up to Christmas Morning and the opening of presents; The father goes to hunt for turkey, the youngest daughter (I don't remember their names) wants to stay up to wait for Santa and so on. The air is filled with excited joy until Laura opens her present and finds a saddle hand-made by her dad. She stares at it for a long time before jumping up to to give him a hug.. and the audience goes "aww" because we figured it had been an almost incredible wish.
*fingers start to go numb from typing*
Mmm.. well, I should get to the point.. Anyway, the mother gets a stove which she has badly wanted and we all think it was a present from the father until she reads the card and it says Laura. Now how can that be since a stove cost the shocking price of $ 8?? See the answer is coming my friend. It turns out Laura sold her beloved pony to the stove-seller's daughter *snifflesniff*
Now this is almost unbearable, that sweet little Laura gave up her pony so her mom could get a stove (and mind you stoves at that time were highly treasured!).. but that's not theworst best... not only did Laura sell her pony but when they all try to comfort her, she turns to her dad with tears in her eyes and says how sorry she is that her dad spend so much time and work on manking the saddle. *sniffletearsob*
And this is where I for some reason got all sentimental and reached for the Kleenex.. while at the same time I was like Hmm.. er.. what's wrong with me..
I used to watch The Little House on the Prairie as a (younger!) child and now I haven't watched it since then, so I guess I got both nostalgic and sentimental. Something must have tricked it... actually it happened before that something really cheesy made me go all "aww" and sniffling.
Did you experience anything like that?
