This was my first proper character bio, it took me a couple of days to write. Any constructive critisism is welcome, if you want clarification on anything, I'll be happy to help, and edit as necessary. Anyway, this is his bio.
Name: Melannen Tirram
Captain of the Guard of the Woodland Realm
Race: Sindar
Age: 1537
Appearance: Long blond hair as is standard in the Sindar. Clear blue eyes. 6 feet tall
Personality: Calm, Clear Thinker, Quiet, but a good decisive leader who is normally tactically sound.
Weapons: Elven sword Baelavel, Elven bow. (also occasionally uses a glaive)
Parentage: Of the Royal House of Thranduil, though not directly related. His mother was a cousin, once removed to Thranduil. His father was a courtier, well respected within Mirkwood. No siblings.
History: He became an orphan at a very young age. When he was just 9 a large party of moria orcs raided the western ringes of Mirkwood. They ransacked the settlement where he had been dwelling with his mother and father. Both were slain during the attack.
At that time Melannen had been out in the woods being taught woodland lore by a friend of his fathers. They recieved wind of the raid on their way back to the village. He was taken to the halls of Thranduil, where he was raised in the court as a noble. He never forgot that orcs slew his parents, and as soon as Thranduil permitted it he learnt how to fight. He learnt to use an elven battle sword, and was trained as an elvish archer by the kings son. He also trained himself with a glaive, a weapon he found in the king’s armoury.
He was just 85 when he first asked the king to let him join the western guard of Mirkwood. The king refused, saying he was too young and inexperienced to join the army. Melannen made the same request many times over the years, and each time it was met with the same response, he was ‘too young, inexperienced, and not well enough versed in the use of his weapons’. But Melannen did not stop asking. He trained every day, honing his skills, until he was able to beat almost anyone in the kings court at fencing and archery. He went to the king once again, and he knew that the king had no grounds to refuse his request. At 235 he was no longer too young, and after training every day for many years he certainly wasn’t unskilled.
Nevertheless the king once again denied him permission to help defend the borders of his realm. Melannen was greatly angered by his king denying what he felt was his right. He took his horse and rode out of the gates to the western borders, in the process he made himself exile.
He spent many years in exile, roaming the lands west of Mirkwood, from the fringes of the woodland realm itself, as far west as Rivendell. And North to South he ranged the length of the Misty Mountains, from the Gap of Rohan to Mount Gundabad. Always moving on, never staying in one place or long. He spent most of his time on his own, but also spent time with bands of men in the wilderness, becoming the leader of many of the bands he joined.
Wherever he roamed his quest was always to remove the threat of the orcs of the Misty Mountains. It did not matter how many he killed, they never went away, they were too numerous.
He had been wandering for many years (307 to be precise), when he was close to where his parents had been slain. On the wind he heard a great clangour, and the cackle of harsh voices.
“Yrch” he muttered to himself, and urged his horse on towards the sound. As he got closer to the source of the noise he saw elves running towards him through the forest, glancing fearfully over their shoulders. One such elf called out to him
“Get away from this place elf, if you wish to live to see the next dawn, for there are many orcs behind us” Melannen recognised his livery as one of the guards of Mirkwood.
“It is unlike the guards of this realm to flee from battle. Especially in such disarray as you do now. The Captain of the Guard is too good a general for his command to retreat so hap-hazardly”
“The Captain is dead. He was slain as we first engaged them” with this the elf left, continuing into the forest. Melannen continued on until he came upon the main force of elves and close behind them the orcs. From what he could see Melannen guessed there were about 1000. The elves were leaderless, their arrows were unco-ordinated and were having little effect. Without thinking he started rapping out commands, trying to organise the retreat. To his surprise they obeyed and he soon had them in four lines. One line fired and then dropped back whilst the next line fired their arrows to cover for them.
As the retreat slowed he dispatched one group into the trees behind to stop the retreat altogether. When the battle reached the trees with the elves in a storm of arrows decimated the orc army. He then led the charge forward into the remaining orcs, and drove them out of the forest and chased them to the Anduin were he finally defeated them.
After destroying the orcs he went back to Mirkwood where the king Thranduil praised his actions and made him Captain of the Western Guard of Mirkwood and gave him the name of Tirram, that is the Border Guard. Despite the fact that he was younger than most of those he commanded, he was well respected by each, not only about his skill as a fighter, but also his ability as a general.
Many times over the years he led his command into battle against orcs to safeguard the woodland realm, and other lands beside. At these times he proved his name Tirram, and showed his ability had grown no less. And some began to claim he was one of the best generals in all middle earth. As the shadow grew, the attcks became more frequent, and each time he defeated the raiders.
When Thranduil went to Erebor and fought in the battle of the Five Armies Melannen was left in charge of the whole realm, in the position of regent, he had asked the king to let him go, but he had been denied, for Thranduil trusted him to keep his kingdom safe whilst he was abroad.
As the King's most trusted Captain he led the armies of Mirkwood in defence of their realm during the war of the ring. And due to his valour, and his leadership, along with the skill of those he commanded, the Woodland realm remained almost untouched for that dark period. And now he has been given more free reign, as the threats have subsided, and he has more opportunities to head out on his own campaigns...
